Getting Started on NVCC Annandale Computers

Signon in Computer Classrooms and Open lab

In the first few weeks of the semester, students can login to computers at the Annandale campus by using a username of ANFALL, a password of Password1, and a domain of nvstu

After this time, students must logon using their LANID. To determine the LANID, go to www.nvcc.edu and click on My Nova at the top right. Then click on the link next to "New to your college" to obtain your LANID. NovaConnect provides an instructor the EMPLIID for those students registered for each class taught by the instructor so I can provide your EMPLIID to you. Alternatively, one can search for it. As noted below, the LANID is also used in web address for the student's web space, so that is another way to determine it if you know the address of your web space. The password is the two-digit birth month, followed by the two-digit birth day of month, followed by the last 4 digits of their social security number. If this doesn't work, try the 4-digit birth year instead of the last 4 digits of the social security number. The domain should be nvstu

Email

NovaConnect provides to an instructor the EMPLIID and email address for those students registered for each class taught by the instructor. This email will be the VCCS email address assigned for the student. The problem is that many students do not check this email address regularly, and so they miss emails from their instructors and others at NVCC. There are several ways to address this problem. First, VCCS email can now be accessed through POP3 client access with email clients such as Outlook, Outlook Express, or Eudora. Second, VCCS email can be set up for automatic forwarding to an account you check more regularly.

To set up automatic forwarding, log on at https://nvcc.my.vccs.edu/, then select Gmail, then click on Settings at the top, and then Options at the left, and then Forwarding and POP/IMAP just below that. You then can enter an email address so that all future email sent to your VCCS email address will be forwarded to another address. Given that you now have over 7GB for mail, you will probably want to select the option to keep a copy of the email on the VCCS server. This screen is also where you enable POP3 access for an email client program..

Student Web Space

Your student web space is located at http://www.student.nvcc.edu/home/yourLANID where yourLANID is replaced by the student's LANID. The FTP settings are as follows:

Host: www.student.nvcc.edu
UserID: nvstu/yourLANID (note: it used to be nvstudent/LANID)
Password: month of birth + date of birth + last four social security #
